A Message from the Grand President, Sharon Brown

Fall 2009

FROM THE GRAND PRESIDENT, SHARON BROWN

Congratulations, Lambda Kappa Sigma!  Alpha Beta Chapter and the city of Hartford recently hosted the 2009 Recruitment Boot Camp and Regional Meeting with the highest attendance for a meeting on record. What a wonderful accomplishment! To those who attended, it is my sincere hope that the meeting provided you with meaningful educational programs, and a renewed sense of who we are as members of Lambda Kappa Sigma.  For those who were unable to attend, but provided support for the program in any way, my most sincere thank you! Without such support, this landmark event would not have been possible. And to those who were not moved to participate this year – we have plenty of opportunities for your participation in Pittsburgh in 2010!

I feel compelled to acknowledge the collegiate members and alumni facilitators who participated in the Recruitment Boot Camp. This program was very intense, and required some very personal introspection in order to identify opportunites to improve the recruiting processes among our collegiate chapters. Each chapter participating – and all but 5 chapters were represented there – has a complete action plan with specific goals related to changing the culture surrounding the identification and active recruitment of potential new members. I have copies of each action plan, and have begun the process of regular communication with chapter members to monitor progress towards the accomplishment of these goals. I invite you to join me in celebrating the enormous commitment of time, effort, and emotion that these dedicated members invested in this program. And to our alumni facilitators – Dixie Leikach, Kathy Huff, Marina Grgas, and Christine Perry – thank you so much for your dedication to the future of the fraternity! Your contributions to the success of this program are invaluable.

This meeting gave fraternity leadership an opportunity to introduce some new concepts to the membership. Transparency and open communication regarding fraternity operations; collegiate ownership and responsibility for the future direction of the fraternity; the concept of an LKS Brand Platform; individual responsibility and personal commitment of each and every chapter member for the successes – and failures – of their chapters; random acts of recognition for significant accomplishments that are aligned with the values of Lambda Kappa Sigma.

Perhaps without conscious intent, there is an atmosphere of change among the membership – change for the better, change that will strengthen our position as the professional organization of choice for pharmacy practitioners. And while change is always difficult, I have seen first hand the excitement among our members at the opportunity to be an active part of that change.

The first year of this biennium has been for me immensely challenging and, I believe, very successful. However, my assessment is not nearly as important or valid as that of the general membership. Please feel free to forward comments, suggestions, or questions related to any aspect of fraternity operations to me and other members of the Grand Council as we head into the busy fall semester and begin the planning for our 2010 Convention in Pittsburgh.  Now that’s a meeting you won’t want to miss!

Fraternally,

Sharon Brown, R.Ph. - Grand President & Lamb for Life

GERALDINE MANZIONE

1933-2009

Beloved LKS sister, Geraldine Manzione, was laid to rest this past week. Gerry was the pillar of our group. Her dedication and devotion to LKS was unsurpassed. Gerry gave her heart to LKS – not only on the local level, but internationally as well. Biennial conventions and Regional meetings all had a touch of Gerry. This touch may have been a hand-painted ceramic lamb, a crocheted afghan or an idea to enrich membership of the collegiates or keep alumni members involved. You did not need to know Gerry personally to have been touched by her. It is unfortunate that we will not have Gerry’s touch for the upcoming convention in Pittsburgh.  We will have her guidance from Heaven

Sincerely, Berni Heron - President, Tau Alumni Chapter
