Alumni Spotlight: Meet Stephanie Alvarez!

LKS spotlights student and alumni members that are making a difference in their chapters, in their communities, and in the field of pharmacy.
Chapter: Alpha Pi Alumni Chapter

LKS Award: 2016 LKS/Merck Vanguard Leadership Award

About Stephanie:

I graduated from St John’s University in 2007. I became a sister in Spring 2002. I served as president of the chapter for 4 years. The experience was challenging. I gained a wealth of knowledge on how to (and how NOT to) be a leader. After graduating, I was a resident at Beth Israel Med Center in Brooklyn, New York. For the next four years, I was an outpatient chemo pharmacist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. I gave birth to my daughter Zia Imani in 2012 and recently went back to community pharmacy.

Most memorable LKS experience?

I have years of memories, but if I had to pick one, it would be when Alpha Pi won Chapter of the Year in 2006. It was unexpected. We worked hard as a chapter but never thought we could ever be considered among the most successful chapters. It was at that moment when I realized through hard work and support from your sisters you can achieve your goals. That night as a chapter we celebrated, laughed and cried. It’s one of the most memorable experiences I have had as a lamb.

Advice to other members?

Esse Quam Videri. Yes, I know that’s our motto, but it has deeper meaning for me now at my age. Having gone through many challenges in my life over the last 10 years, it is imperative to be true to who you are and do what makes you happy.

Are you a lamb for life?

LKS is not “just another membership”. This is my family. I have always been able to count on my sisters for support. No matter where I go, no matter what I do, my sisters are there for me. Even if time and distance keeps us apart, I am always welcomed home. It’s that connection that makes me a Lamb for Life.

What job would you do if you weren’t a pharmacist?

I would be an event planner. Weddings, parties, meetings, tours—it doesn’t matter. I love to plan out details and put together an experience for guests. Maybe it’s the structure and checklist, detail review, or the concept of creating a memory for others to enjoy. Pharmacist by day and event planner by night!
