Meet Sammy Troy

Tell us about yourself

My name is Sammy Troy and I am a member of the Alpha Beta chapter at the University of Connecticut. I am a rising P2 and have been a member of LKS since my sophomore year. In the fall of my P1 year I held my first leadership position as Pharmacy Student Government Representative, a liaison between LKS and PSG, and in the spring transitioned to the role of New Member Educator. One unique thing about our chapter is that all of the year-long positions are held during the calendar year instead of the school year. This allows our incoming President and Treasurer to have a semester working closely with the person currently in their position. This coming semester I will continue as Mem Ed, but will also work with our President as President-Elect.

I have worked as a technician and then as an intern for CVS for 3 years and this summer I started at the VA Medical Center in CT as an inpatient pharmacy intern. I’m very involved at UConn and especially within the School of Pharmacy, including serving on the E-Board of Pharmacy Student Government, educating the community on the uses of naloxone as the Chair of the No Friend Left nALoxONE Committee and as a member of CPNP and APhA. In my (very limited) free time, I enjoy reading, playing with my dog Kemba (named after UConn basketball player Kemba Walker), and binge-watching Netflix.

Most memorable LKS experience

I attended my first Convention in 2017 in Atlanta, and I had a great time networking, meeting other sisters, and learning about LKS on a national level. I also joined the Communications Committee, chaired by the lovely Christine Perry, which has helped me stay involved with LKS as a whole during the year. I also attended Convention this year in Buffalo, and it was even better than my first! It was fun to see some of the same members from last year and continue to grow my appreciation for this organization. From the speakers to the food truck, every moment at Convention was special and it was so fun to experience it all with my AB sisters.

Why did you join LKS?

I joined LKS as a sophomore because I wasn’t really involved in anything my freshman year. I was a little nervous to add activities into a time full of change, but now I regret that so much and wish I had joined LKS sooner! My favorite and most memorable LKS experiences have been at Convention, both last year in Atlanta and this year in Buffalo. Attending these meetings has been such an enjoyable and rewarding experience and I can see myself attending as many as possible for the foreseeable future.

Future Career Plans?

As of now, I don’t have any solid career plans but am looking into pursuing a residency or a fellowship in industry. I’ve really enjoyed my time working in the hospital this summer and could definitely see myself as a specialty pharmacist in an inpatient facility. However, I’ve also been looking into different opportunities in industry at companies near to me since I live close to multiple big pharmaceutical companies. I’m hoping to stay relatively close to home when I graduate because I love the Connecticut coast and being so close to New York City! I’m so grateful to have LKS and all the experienced sisters and alumni to look to. It’s so amazing to know I have so many people to ask for advice regarding multiple career paths.
